A collaborative project with groups in Blackpool, made as a wedding gift for Prince William and Kate Middleton in 2011. As much as celebration of Blackpool and its people as the royal event, the quilt brought many disparate people together in the making. An article I wrote, about this social engagement project, for the Association of Social Anthropologist’s annual conference in Delhi in 2012 is housed in Blackpool archives. The quilt was presented to the couple shortly before their wedding.
The quilt has over one hundred signatures and a lovely range of stitched images of the town, both old and new. Everyone involved has been great and as well as the sewing we have shared tales of Blackpool and people’s history. Maude told me she was “sand grown” (born in Blackpool) a phrase I had not heard before.
