Carrier bags

This series of quilts made in the mid 2000’s offers commentary on the omnipotence of supermarkets and the ubiquitous plastic carrier bags. In documenting and drawing attention to these through-away  items, there is an added irony in preserving them for future generations.

Several quilts employ a traditional patchwork technique “suffolk puffs” to construct circles from plastic bags. The bags are thus transformed to circles of colour and pattern, these are then pieced together to convey a message to the viewer. As with traditional quilts, future generations will be able to learn something of the maker and period of the “cloth by the choice of materials (bags) used.

Mums are Heroes, a hand stitched quilt documents nine of the main supermarkets in Britain. In the short time since this cloth was made (2006) two have already disappeared from our high streets.

In 2007 Lynn was invited to take create work for The Great Indoors, part of  the  first Manchester International Festival an interactive workshop using recycled materials and involving hundreds of participants.
